What is Cacao?
Theobroma cacao literally translates to Food of the Gods! (Theo = God + bromo = food)
Cacao is the grinded beans from the cacao pods - the fruit or seed of the Theobroma Cacao tree.
Indigenous to Central and South America, from the tropical rainforests close to the equator.
Traces of cacao have been found in archaeological excavations from 3200 BC in Ecuadorian Amazons! It was found in ceremonial locations and tombs as it was used in rituals. Along the lines of history it has been used by the Olmecs, Mayans, Toltecs and Aztecs.
Cacao was revealed to Colombus in 1502 and 16 years later Cortes learned about the commercial, cultural, spiritual, dietary and medicinal qualities. An entourage of Spanish Frias and Mayan nobility brought cacao to Europe where is became very popular.
